Sustainable retrofit solutions give the city centre a new lease of life by night
The historic centre of 's-Hertogenbosch has been at the heart of city life for centuries. From the listed buildings on the Markt and the Parade to the distinctive streets of Verwersstraat and Hinthamerstraat, heritage is everywhere. Therefore, upgrading the public lighting focused on preserving the city's familiar character while making it future-ready.
Existing infrastructure, new possibilities
The municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch is working toward becoming climate-neutral by 2045. Rather than replacing entire street lights, the city is making smarter use of existing infrastructure by retrofitting them with new technology.
This approach achieves significant energy savings, promotes circularity, extends the lifespan of installations, and preserves the historic streetscape. By retaining valuable materials and managing current assets sustainably, the upgrade aligns seamlessly with the council’s broader environmental ambitions.

We wanted to save energy and make careful use of what we already have. By giving the existing luminaires a new lease of life, we are combining sustainability with preserving the familiar streetscape of 's-Hertogenbosch.
Historic luminaires, modern technology
For this upgrade, we implemented various retrofit solutions to integrate seamlessly with the existing lighting network. Hellux, Hahn and Helm luminaires were fitted with the Schréder CIRCLE LED BASE, enabling the original housing to be retained while upgrading the internal lighting technology.
Additionally, existing TECEO luminaires have been fitted with a TECEO UPLINK retrofit module, connecting them to Schréder EXEDRA. This enables the local authorities to remotely manage, monitor and control the lighting, using dynamic dimming profiles to adjust the light levels as required.
Working together towards a sustainable city centre
From the outset, we collaborated closely with the local council to deliver solutions that met sustainability goals without compromising the city centre’s historic character and atmosphere.
By incorporating the latest LED and connected technology into existing luminaires, the project has successfully saved energy, reduced raw material usage and delivered a modern system, proving that innovation and conservation can go hand in hand.
The strength of this project lies in collaboration. The local authority knew exactly which sustainability targets it wanted to achieve, and we developed a retrofit solution that is technically futureproof and blends in with the historic city centre.
Visible results for the city and its residents
The upgraded lighting system delivers significant energy savings, helping the council to meet its climate targets. Maintenance costs are also reduced, and the flexible management system allows the lighting to be easily adapted to changing circumstances.
This approach demonstrates that modernisation does not always require complete replacement. Upgrading existing luminaires in a sustainable way ensures that the public lighting network is ready for the future while staying true to the city’s heritage.
As you walk through the city in the evening, you will notice that the atmosphere remains the same, but the lighting has become more energy-efficient and intelligent. This makes the project a tangible result of our sustainability policy.
