Oriente Station
LED lighting upgrade improves safety and comfort for passengers in this major transport hub with 40% energy savings
Oriente Station is a major transport hub in Lisbon. It is also a work of art, designed by the famous Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, for the 1998 World Expo along with the popular neighbouring Parque das Nações.
With five levels, the station currently serves more than 150,000 people a day with 200 trains, 160 metro trains, several hundred buses including urban, suburban, national and international, 600 taxis and more than 2,200 private vehicles.
In 2023, Infraestruturas de Portugal, the company that manages the station, launched an international public tender to replace the lighting system, which consisted of more than 8,500 luminaires that had reached the end of their service life and required constant maintenance to keep the station well lit. The objective was clear: to reduce the energy bill for lighting and the costs and constraints associated with maintenance.
Schréder, a partner for the most complex lighting challenges
The tender called for a comprehensive turnkey solution to meet the complex lighting needs of the station. The challenge was to select and install a variety of lighting solutions suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces, each with specific requirements. The project also required careful dismantling of the existing equipment and precise installation of the new system.
Our extensive experience in lighting design and project management, combined with our wide range of lighting solutions, enabled us to propose a lighting solution that would meet all the challenges.
Schréder’s flexible lighting solutions put to the test
To ensure a safe and comfortable environment for passengers and staff, the following luminaires were installed:
- over 2,000 uplights and downlights to illuminate the mezzanine levels, which house various shops, restaurants and ticket offices;
- more than 2,500 INDU LINE luminaires to light the underground car parks, upper walkways and various technical galleries;
- LED panels (1230x300) for the control rooms and technical areas;
- nearly 300 INDU FLOOD floodlights to illuminate the ground-floor waiting areas where the taxi and bus services are located (installed in canopies to protect passengers from rain and sun).
VALINTA CURVE luminaires to highlight the station’s iconic architecture
On the lower and middle levels, 120 VALINTA CURVE luminaires recessed in niches highlight the organic shapes of the concrete structures that support the ceilings.
On the upper level, 240 VALINTA CURVE luminaires recessed in the columns (4 per column) illuminate the platform roofs, made up of a structure of metal elements reminiscent of an ancient forest. This metal structure, the emblem of the station and one of the most important works of art in Lisbon, has also been modernised with LED modules installed in its cupolas, while preserving the original aesthetic.
Significant energy and maintenance savings
As well as providing more comfortable and efficient lighting, the new lighting at Oriente station offers significant infrastructure management benefits. The installed power has been reduced by more than 40%, resulting in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.
Maintenance savings are also considerable, as all discharge technology has been replaced with LED technology, which has a much longer life, reducing the need for interventions to replace light sources.
The new energy-efficient lighting enhances the passenger experience and ensures that this landmark continues to be a stunning nocturnal feature on the Lisbon nightscape.
