Kapermolen swimming pool lighting

LED lighting for improved safety, energy savings and lower maintenance costs

The Kapermolen public swimming pool in Hasselt, in the province of Limburg, is an exceptional facility for both sports and leisure enthusiasts.

The indoor facilities include a large 25 x 20.4m pool with a depth of 2m, a 150m² wave pool, a 65m² children's pool, a small 25 x 10m pool with a depth of up to 3.5m for diving, and a 65m slide. Outside, there's an Olympic-size pool, a 150m² children's pool and a bar area, all set in lush green surroundings. This modern sports complex has also been designed to accommodate people with reduced mobility, with specially adapted facilities.

The council wanted to renovate the pool's lighting with clear objectives in mind:

  • ensure safety for all;
  • reduce energy consumption and
  • cut maintenance costs.

Maximising sustainability to minimise operating costs

The old lighting was costly and complex to maintain, especially as the pool only closes for a very short period once a year. Some of the luminaires in the recreational area were only accessible with a lift, making maintenance difficult and costly. In addition, some of the old, faulty luminaires were a safety hazard, particularly in the leisure area, which includes the white water course and wave pool. A more efficient and durable lighting solution was needed.

Following a tender process, Schréder's INDU FLOOD luminaire was selected to meet the challenges of this environment. With a lifetime of 100,000 hours, a robust design and a high level of protection against moisture ingress, this LED floodlight will provide efficient, reliable lighting for many years to come, with no maintenance required.

By replacing the old fixtures with our INDU FLOOD LED luminaires, energy consumption has been reduced by 64%. This reduction was critical for the council, who are keen to secure the long-term future of this sports facility by managing energy costs as effectively as possible.

Meeting the specific requirements for swimming pools

In addition to a long lifetime, the luminaires had to meet the European standard for sports lighting (EN12193) and the stringent requirements for swimming pool environments. Our experience in luminaire design and expertise in sports infrastructure lighting ensured that the INDU FLOOD LED floodlight met all the requirements:

  • class C4 corrosion resistance suitable for this type of environment;
  • trouble-free operation at temperatures of up to 45°C;
  • asymmetrical light distribution to avoid glare for lifeguards and swimmers.

Improving safety and the visitor experience

Lifeguards play a vital role in ensuring the safety of swimmers and need perfect visibility to effectively monitor the different areas of the pool.
Our team carried out a photometric study and proposed an asymmetric light distribution. The INDU FLOOD luminaires provide a highly uniform lighting that eliminates shadows and dark spots in and around the pool, ensuring excellent visibility with zero glare. The improved visibility means greater safety for everyone, especially in the leisure areas with the white water course and wave pool. The high quality of the lighting creates a safer and more enjoyable environment for swimmers.

A highly responsive team to meet deadlines

Thanks to our expertise in swimming pool lighting, we were able to meet the tight deadline, between the customer’s decision to install the INDU FLOOD and the commissioning which took place from 11th to 23rd December 2023, when the swimming pool was closed for the year. The reactivity of the team, the meticulous planning and the excellent coordination between Schréder and the installer Verbiest ETI were key to this success, to the great satisfaction of the City of Hasselt.

The city of Hasselt is actively committed to making its municipal facilities more sustainable. The new lighting of the municipal swimming pool is a strategic choice to reduce energy consumption and guarantee the efficiency and quality of the lighting.
