Parques del Río Medellín Tunnel

Sustainable lighting solution ensures a safe and comfortable passage in this tunnel, built to reconquer recreational spaces for residents

A city known for its urban innovations, Medellín has undertaken its most ambitious plan to date. The Parques del Río Medellín project aims to completely transform the surroundings of the river, turning a motorway into a tunnel and building a city park above it to provide more recreational spaces and encourage social interaction.

The first step of the plan was completed in 2017 with the construction of a tunnel that buries a 540m stretch of motorway.

The local authorities wanted a sustainable lighting solution that would guarantee the safety and comfort of all users passing through the tunnel while minimising energy costs and the carbon footprint.

To achieve their objectives, they chose the OMNIstar and GL2 Compact LED luminaires.

The energy-efficient OMNIstar lights the threshold zones to provide the required high luminance requirements specified for the tunnel entrance.
The GL2 Compact lights the 6 lanes of the interior section.

Both luminaires provide ideal uniformity and minimal glare.
At the same time, they also protect the light source from the highly corrosive and humid tunnel environmental conditions.
The white light provided by the LEDs also enhances visibility and increases comfort for tunnel users.

BJ marker lights were installed along the entire length of the tunnel. Permanently illuminated, they clearly indicate the road and guide drivers naturally through the tunnel under normal circumstances and in case of fire.

The local authorities are delighted with the lighting that ensures a fluid flow of traffic with a pleasant driving experience for the people who pass through every day while minimising the city’s carbon footprint.
