Solar lighting for Ribeira de Alcantarilha bridge

FLAMINIA bollards ensure a safe passage and preserve the coastal environment

The 3.5-kilometre Ribeira de Alcantarilha walkway connects Praia dos Pescadores in Armação de Pera (Silves) to Ribeira dos Salgados (Albufeira). It forms part of the Southern Coastal Ecovia, which spans the Algarve, and crosses the beautiful Praia Grande beach. The walkway is popular with both locals and tourists. Whether they are cycling, running or walking over the dunes, visitors can enjoy the unique experience of combining exercise with stunning natural landscapes, as well as local fauna and flora.

A bridge to improve mobility

However, the connection between the walkway and the more urban area of Armação was hindered by one obstacle: the Ribeira de Alcantarilha, the endpoint of a small river flowing into Armação de Pera. To overcome this barrier, the Municipality of Silves decided to build a bridge between the riverbanks to encourage full use of the infrastructure.

Safety with sustainable lighting

As the bridge crosses a ford, the local authorities wanted a lighting solution that would ensure safety after dark and encourage people to use it without compromising sustainability goals or harming the local biodiversity.

Lighting solution powered by solar energy

To address the environmental concerns of the Municipality of Silves, we proposed the FLAMINIA solar-powered lighting bollard. It is the perfect solution for this location and the local authorities because it:

  • generates zero energy bills;
  • emits zero carbon emissions;
  • requires no electrical wiring;
  • protects marine life by avoiding any light spill and
  • elegantly integrates the landscape.

We were delighted to collaborate on this project with the local authorities, contributing to both safety and environmental protection along the Ecovia.
